Burglar Alarm
Is there an insurance approved burglar alarm that I can fit myself?
I am looking for a burglar alarm that I can fit myself (preferably therefore wireless) that complies to insurance requirements. I would imagine there is some sort of E-mark or kite mark that applies to this kind of thing but none of the alarms I see on the web seem to offer one. I have a telephone line that I can use to connect it to if necessary and I am quite handy with a screwdriver.
The insurance companies (at least the ones I have come across) insist the alarm system is installed by a certified installer and regularly maintained. In exchange, they might give you a discount of up to 10% on your annual contents premium. The downside side is that, if you forget to set your alarm and get burgled, they hit you with a MASSIVE excess which is out of all proportion to the discount they might have given you. For this reason, even though I have an approved alarm system and have only ever forgotten to set it once, I do not declare it for insurance purposes. I don’t want to give the b@stards the excuse not to pay out. I’ve been mugged by the insurance companies once and that was enough.
